shocking that sort of stuff is still going on in 2023.

I guess if my union sided with my employer rather than me when I was fired for gross incompetence, I'd tend to look on (all) unions in a less favourable light...too.

Anyway, it is fascinating how these unions are facilitating the most cynical aspect of Tory political marketing. So stupid.

Just out of interest, I just took a quick look at a particular 'coaching' company's website. Don't worry, I'm not going to reveal which one, because that would be a dick move too far, even for me. Anyway, I was interested in the DIVERSITY of their staff, so clicked on the page offering photos and bios of their team. I was virtually SNOWBLINDED. Maybe diversity is a great idea for some companies, but not others.

Also, ARF! What a bunch of frigging weirdos!

Re: I'm ashamed of some of the shit our govt does.
Actually the promotion of diversity as an employment policy is basic good business practice because it is integral to increasing labour productivity and keeping a lid on costs. Of course the unions that have no better strategy than screwing business by what amounts to simple blackmail hate it, but then they just hate business full stop.

Mike Oxsaw 2:29 Mon Aug 21
Re: I'm ashamed of some of the shit our govt does.
Don't forget that the (traditional) union view is that all these blue- and sub-blue-collar workers are lovely, lovely, potential members, no matter what the effect of their arrival is on their existing membership.

Business owners are not the only ones playing the numbers game with regard to immigration.

Absolutely, its a cheat code for big business that keeps wages low and erodes unity (look up how Amazon explicitly use diversity as an anti-union strategy) yet Tory spastics will keep voting for them thinking they'll stop it, and Labour spastics will keep supporting it while having the gall to say they're pro-working class.

So, should we reward the Saudis with more arms for mowing down hundreds - maybe thousands - of potential illegal immigrants into their country to simply ensure that none of them were "just" embarking on a trip to Dover & Benefit City?

Hammer and Pickle 12:24 Mon Aug 21
Re: I'm ashamed of some of the shit our govt does.
The bullshit sold as immigration policy is very much an illustration of Tory cynicism. There is no way, in the current labour market, that it was anything other than an empty promise designed to lure the restful, frustrated and generally useless welfare scammer.

stewie griffin 12:24 Mon Aug 21
Re: I'm ashamed of some of the shit our govt does.
I think 'Tories' in the traditional sense should absolutely be pro-immigration. Its fundamentally a right wing / capitalist concept - bringing in cheap labour that increases profits for business.

What's fascinating these days is that race has been weaponised to such a degree that the left - the traditional opponents of immigration because it absolutely fucks the working class by undercutting & lowering wages - are now required to squeam about bigotry and other such nonsense and back something that hurts their traditional voter base.

It's already 'out' but no one gives a toss, they just read the headlines, STOP THE BOATS, it feeds their bigotry.

I don't agree with your meta-point that we should let them in (we shouldn't), but.....

One day it'll come out that Rishi, Priti, and all the other Tories that everyone on here voted for to stop all this are are getting quite wealthy off them all coming in.

Re: I'm ashamed of some of the shit our govt does.
Westside it's pretty much accepted that governments get voted out as opposed to.the opposition being voted in necessarily. All they really need do.when a government is this unpopular is be organised and unified and look credible. I think it's fair to say that has just applied to.tories more ( ie being voted out for being unpopular) because they have been.in.power more often, that doesn't mean when either side have a majority that it's especially democratic. You can't not see that the system.we have leaves many many people unrepresented left and right..

Hammer and Pickle 11:07 Mon Aug 21
Re: I'm ashamed of some of the shit our govt does.
There definitely is an objective problem with the over-representation of rural, Tory voting seats to the determent of urban centres of population. This is a basic objective fact and no amount of bullshit, gaslighting or distraction is going to make it go away.

The real problem though is how the Tories have long abandoned any political project other than clinging on to power for the sake of it; this has sadly turned the UK into a stagnant political backwater when once it was a leader and an inspiration for all who want prosperity, free trade and strong democratic institutions. Maybe its electoral reform that is needed to shake this malaise because it really is shocking how the Brits are often basically seen as scammers and freeloaders in Europe today.

Re: I'm ashamed of some of the shit our govt does.
"and electoral.reform.has always been one of their highest priorities."

They didnt prioritise electoral reform with anything like the vigour they showed for free university education for all yet shat all over that idea when saint Nick shared the big chair.

Re: I'm ashamed of some of the shit our govt does.
How can that be entirely down to the policies on offer when you have one party representing the interests of one group.of voters but a few different ones who don't want that party in charge but are competing with eachother for votes.

Oh, I see. When the Tories win, it's down to the vagries of the FPTP system, not their policies. Yet, when Labour win, under the same system, it's because of their polices.

I take it, you aren't taking the bet, on PR, being in the next Labour manifesto?

We know that in the last set of council and by elections that tactical voting has been in play. If that plays out in the GE too then you could be looking at the Tories losing a lot of seats.

So what? That's the nature of the beast. It's called democracy.

Westside 10:22 Mon Aug 21

Labour voters don't want PR eh?

https://natcen.ac.uk/news/half-britain-wants-voting-system-change-clear-majority-among-labour-supporters

And Starmer has already said it won't be in the next election manifesto.

Also. the referendum.was hardly decisive the turn.out was low, you can only say it was decisive among those who bothered voting not overall among the electorate..

Please, criticising a referendum turnout, because it wasn't the result you wanted/
